Portland

I turned 21 this year, a big birthday!

My boyfriend and I have the same birthday, too, only he is four years older than me. I usually don’t do things for myself, especially trips and things that require more money, but I wanted to do something special, since this is such a special birthday, and I’ll be gaining a career soon, which means less time to travel.

I wanted to share the pictures of my trip. It was one of the best trips I’ve ever been on. My uncle lives there, and he was great about suggesting the best places to go. But while he was at work during the day, Ryan and I found plenty of places to go and things to do.

We had such a hard time actually getting there in the beginning. Our first flight was delayed four times, which meant that we would miss our connecting flight. But Ryan worked some kind of magic and got us new tickets that actually got us there even earlier than we were meant to get there.

I can’t remember exactly which order these pictures were taken in, so I’ll just tell you what happened in them. This is one night when we went to dinner at a place called Yakuza. I have sushi and Ryan had a Kobe beef burger, which he said was one of the best burgers he’s had.

One thing I loved about Portland was that there was art almost everywhere. Also the weather. It was in the high 70’s, low 80’s while we were there, sometimes I had to wear a sweatshirt and jeans it was so chilly, which is so nice after the humid, hot weather here.

Also, the food. Some restaurants that really stood out were Pip’s Doughnuts, Bamboo sushi, Yakuza, Blue Star Donuts, Pine State Biscuits, and Salt and Straw. But my favorite meal was at a brunch place called Muscadine. They had such amazing biscuits and gravy.

I loved getting to spend a week traveling with Ryan. I feel like we got to experience many new things together, and it was great getting to do that.

One of my favorite days was when we got to go to the International Rose Test Garden, and to a Japanese Garden they have there.

It was so beautiful. If you’re okay with paying for the Japanese Garden over the free Rose Garden, it is worth the money.

There was also a zoo there that we went to. It’s a bit small, bit still nice.

We only got to go hiking one day out of the week, but it was beautiful. It made me realize that I should really do it more, and that I wish we had more sights like this closer to where I live.

Another one of my favorite days was the day we went to Cannon Beach.

Cannon Beach is where the Goonies was filmed, you’ll recognize Haystack rock from the end of the movie. It’s a beautiful beach. The water was freezing cold, though.

Finally, this was my first legal drink. Ever since I went to England last year, I can’t find ciders like they had there. But we went to a cider bar, and they tasted pretty close. They even gave me a free pint because it was my birthday.

For dinner, we went to a place that was on top of a huge building, that looked out over downtown. Then we went to an underground bar, with really fancy cocktails. I didn’t get crazy at all for my birthday. I don’t like to get drunk, I just felt like I should drink a little bit for my birthday. My uncle was very nice in taking us to these bars, and I have a feelings he had even more fun than I did.

I also just wanted to mention how great our Airbnb was.

They had a wonderfully comfortable bed, two cats, which made us feeling even more at home, and were so nice to us. I felt bad, we didn’t hardly spend any time there, as we would leave early in the morning and get in late at night, to try and get the most out of our vacation.

In short, I would go back there in a heartbeat. Ryan would, too. And if someone else actually reads through this whole post, I commend you.

Haven’t been here

I know I should be writing more, but let me give you 23 excuses why I haven’t.

-I’m in school and it’s been hectic with finals going on right now.

-I had to write a feature screenplay to turn in for my screenwriting classes.

-I had to write an essay on the Coen brothers for my World Cinema Class.

-I got a new kitten named Kylo Ren, very spontaneously, and have been trying to get him adjusted to our older cat.

-Blah, blah, blah.

But a lot had been going on recently. My mother is a widow, but she reunited with her high school boyfriend over the past year, and they just got engaged a couple weeks ago. Talk about having to work through some problems. He’s the exact opposite of my dad and it’s been weird. My dad was an introverted, quiet, pensive man, where her fiancé talks so fast it doesn’t seem that he takes breaths. He is loud and loves to hug and touch people. And it is just very much for me. They plan on getting married later this summer.

My mom is a preacher as well and she’s moving to a different church. We’ve been at this church for almost 8 years (most preachers only stay 4), and she’s actually been moved to a church in the town her now-fiancé lives in, talk about God’s hand moving in mysterious ways.

So we have to pack up the house so that she can move there by the end of June. My mom’s renting an apartment for my brother to live in so he can finish high school in our hometown. We’re trying to figure out where our cats can live. It’s expensive to pay for each animal to live in an apartment, but if my mom lives with her fiancé, he has two giant bulldogs, and I don’t see them getting along.

I have a lot of change going on in my life right now. At least, that’s what it feels like. I just hope I can handle it all well.

So. Tired.

Oh my gosh, I am tired. I’m a person that needs sleep. Not too much, but definitely not any less than 8 hours of it.

I go to film school and each year we are in school, we get to make a movie with our peers. Each year, the productions get bigger and fewer actually get made, but I’m a second year, and our productions are going out to shoot currently. I know that I love film and all of that (I want to go into editing), but oh my gosh, do I not like being on set. I don’t like waiting around, I don’t like people waiting on me, and I don’t like being with people for a prolonged amount of time, which is everything a film set is. I’m lucky I want to be an editor. I can sit in a dark room by myself for as long or as little as I want.

The Beginning

I’m not too sure about blogging. I have never blogged very much before, but I am attempting screenwriting along with editing in my schooling, and have been very much stuck with my writing lately. I think that writing regularly will help with that a little bit, even though it isn’t in a fictitious or screenplay format.

So hi! If someone reads this. This is more for me, really, but my name is Kinsey. I don’t know how much information to reveal on this website, as I am slightly Internet paranoid. You know what? Instead of this being strictly a journaling format for me, I’m going to do writing exercises, for the whole world to see. (Yay?)

I have a book called 642 Things to Write About, so I think that I shall use it.

First prompt!:

“A houseplant is dying. Tell it why it needs to live.”

(I’m assuming it’s my fault the plant is dying)

Mr. Plant,

You need to live for a little while longer because you bring a little more happiness into my life. I know it’s selfish of me to want to possibly continue your suffering, but I hope that if you allow me to continue to take care of you, I can do better and make you the most beautiful, healthy plant I have ever seen.

I know that sometimes I leave and forget to have someone water you. You may be growing out of that pot, but I’ll buy you a new one! I’ll buy you anything you want if you just stay with me! Just a little while longer. You make the air that I breathe, you bring life other than myself into my tiny, desolate room. You inspire me to appreciate nature more. Because what is more awesome than photosynthesis?! You can make food for yourself out of sunlight!

If I make this promise and commitment to you today, I hope that we can continue to grow (huh?) in our relationship. That we can plant our roots (huh? huh?) deep into the soil and flourish. You depend on me way more than I depend of you, but I like to take care of things. I’m sorry I ever let you down, you beautiful creature.

Best,

Kinsey
